Folding iPhone: Apple Raises Production Targets by 40%

Supply chain data indicates Apple has significantly expanded manufacturing for the iPhone Duo, citing record-breaking pre-order activity that strained initial logistics.

Apple has increased production orders for the iPhone Duo by more than 40%, a move attributed to unprecedented consumer interest in the company's first folding smartphone. This substantial upward revision, reported by supply chain sources, signals a strategic shift to meet demand that far outpaced initial logistical preparations.

The urgency for this production boost became apparent immediately after pre-orders opened on Friday. Customers quickly observed that estimated delivery dates slipped by several months, with some allocations extending into late January. While it was initially ambiguous whether these delays resulted from supply constraints or genuine market saturation, the latest intelligence firmly points to the latter.

Apple characterized the initial response as "extraordinary," a descriptor the company has frequently employed during previous flagship launches. To mitigate the impact of scalpers who might hoard inventory, the company imposed a cap of two units per customer. As anticipated, some early purchasers subsequently received revised, earlier shipping estimates, suggesting that the initial backlog was being actively managed.

According to DigiTimes, which cites supply chain insiders, Apple is aggressively ramping up manufacturing capabilities. The company expects this high level of demand to persist, prompting a significant adjustment to its shipment targets for the device.

Specifically, the report indicates that Apple has raised its goal for the first 12 months from 9.7 million units to 14 million units. This 4.3 million unit increase underscores the magnitude of the shift and reflects a more optimistic internal outlook regarding the device's market penetration.

Despite the hardware surge, early adopters face software challenges, primarily because third-party applications have not yet been fully optimized for the new form factor. Apple asserts that the situation is improving rapidly as developers adapt their codebases. Initial reviews, based on a week of usage, consistently highlight app support as a key area of focus among five main takeaways from the experience.

Another point of contention in early reviews was the decision to utilize Touch ID rather than Face ID for biometric security. However, a report released today suggests that Apple is already testing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2, which would reportedly revert to Face ID, indicating a potential course correction for the next iteration of the folding line.
